One year of the Inflation Reduction Act

GIFS to Use

CORE MESSAGE: In just one year, the Inflation Reduction Act is already delivering on President Biden’s promise to grow the economy by growing the middle class — lowering costs for families, creating good-paying jobs for workers, and investing in a clean energy future by making billionaires and corporations pay what they owe.

Key Proof Points

ON ECONOMIC GROWTH

The Inflation Reduction Act is growing the economy by growing the middle class and shepherding in a clean energy future.

  • More than 170,600 new jobs have already been created for electricians, mechanics, construction workers, technicians, and support staff.
  • More than $500 billion in private sector manufacturing and clean energy investments have been made, including $7.7 billion in the U.S. offshore wind industry since the IRA passed.

Over the next decade, the IRA is projected to create more than 1.5 million good jobs through its clean energy investments.

  • This is in addition to sustaining the millions of existing jobs in the clean economy.

ON CLEAN ENERGY

The Inflation Reduction Act is investing in our future and accelerating the clean energy transition, getting us 80% of the way to our 2030 climate commitments

  • These investments mean people will have more resources to fight climate change, lower their energy bills, and drive the clean energy transition.

By providing up to $28,500 in tax credits and rebates to buy electric vehicles and energy-efficient home appliances, the IRA is empowering middle class families by providing the tools they need to thrive, cutting costs, and accelerating the clean energy transition.

  • Without the savings from the IRA, the average U.S. household would spend an estimated $1,025 more on energy bills in 2030.

ON HEALTH CARE

With the Inflation Reduction Act, the uninsured rate reached an all-time low in 2022:

  • 13 million Americans will keep saving an average of $800 a year on health insurance premiums, and 3 million more people will have health insurance than without the IRA.

Medicare can now negotiate lower prescription drug prices for up to 7 million Americans.

  • Insulin costs are now capped at $35 a month for 3.3 million seniors.
  • Thanks to pressure from the Biden administration, the three largest insulin makers, which control 90% of the market, have announced that they’re lowering costs.
  • Out-of-pocket drug costs are now capped at no more than $2,000 a year for 50 million Medicare beneficiaries.

ON CORPORATE GREED

Trickle-down economics has failed the country for decades, and President Biden is charting a fundamentally different course.

The IRA Tax Plan ensures greedy corporations and the ultra-wealthy pay what they owe:

  • Institutes 15% minimum corporate tax on the largest profitable corporations;

A promise that no family making less than $400,000 per year will see their taxes go up by a single cent.

MAGA REPUBLICAN CONTRAST

MAGA Republicans are taking credit for historic investments in America’s infrastructure — investments that they voted against and actively tried to undermine.

  • They are threatening to repeal historic investments in growing our economy and fueling our clean energy transition, all while they jeopardize job growth and raise energy costs.

MAGA Republicans are putting Big Pharma and Big Oil donors over Americans in need of life-saving medications or protecting our clean air and water.

Instead of reducing the deficit, MAGA Republicans have rejected several tax plans, and threatened tax cuts for the richest 1% and foreign investors

  • They favored massive handouts to crypto and real-estate speculators, while taking money away from our economic investments and key programs that Americans rely on.

Georgia Indictment

Talking Points

No one is above the law – not even a former President of the United States.

That’s why, following a more than two-year investigation, a grand jury of everyday Americans in Georgia reviewed mountains of evidence and indicted former President Donald Trump and key allies like his lawyers Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman, and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on 41 criminal charges for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.

The indictment tells a straightforward story: Trump led a criminal conspiracy that included 18 co-defendants and 30 unindicted co-conspirators to commit fraud and illegally reverse the will of Georgia voters even though Trump and his team already knew he’d lost.

That’s why Trump and his co-conspirators are being charged under Georgia’s RICO statute given that the charges encompass a wide range of conspirators from the Oval Office to low-level Georgia GOP functionaries.

According to the indictment:

  • Trump and his team illegally pressured Georgia officials to recognize Trump as the winner of Georgia’s electoral votes – even though Trump and his team knew he lost.

This includes:

  • In a phone call, Trump demanded Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger “find 11,780” votes in his favor.
  • Trump’s staff harassed state legislators and election authorities.
  • Trump and his team illegally organized fake Electoral College electors to falsely proclaim that he was the winner of the state of Georgia.
  • Trump campaign staff illegally hacked voting machines in Coffee County, Georgia in an effort to prove their false claim that Trump won the election.

This indictment is a big step toward accountability for the attempts to overthrow the 2020 election.

It’s of the utmost importance that this matter be brought to trial promptly.

RESOURCES

  • Background: Fulton County Special Grand Jury Investigation Into 2020 Presidential Interference
  • Explainer: Understanding the Trump Criminal Cases

TOPLINE MESSAGING

  • This is accountability by the people of Georgia, for the people of Georgia.  A special grand jury of Georgians investigated crimes against the people of Georgia – a conspiracy to rob them of their right to decide elections for themselves.
  • Another grand jury of everyday Georgians made it clear: There will be  consequences for it.
  • The indictment lays out clearly what happened in 2020: Georgia voters made their decision  in a free and fair election. And then Donald Trump, his lawyers, a small group of state party  officials, and 16 fake electors thought they should get to decide instead. They tried to take  that power away from the people.
  • Our elections are run by the states. So state and local officials, like District Attorney  Willis in this case and Attorney General Nessel in Michigan, have a responsibility to  defend the voters when someone tries to interfere with an election.
  • This is what it looks like to have zero tolerance for attacks on our elections. This was a full scale attack on Georgia’s election, and nobody is getting a pass.
  • One thing that’s notable about this indictment is that it goes top to bottom. Donald  Trump is charged, but so are the lawyers who betrayed their oaths and helped him.  So are the state party officials in Georgia who played a part. So are the people who  tried to pass themselves off as duly qualified electors for Trump, when Trump lost the state.

  ADDITIONAL MESSAGING

This is the summer of accountability. And every step forward matters.

This indictment comes after the Justice Department’s indictment of Donald Trump  and after charges against 16 fake electors in Michigan.

These are investigations that have taken years. That’s why we’re here now. It’s not  about the campaign schedule. Accountability takes time, and prosecutors have to  follow the facts and the law.

  • The plot to overthrow the 2020 election was a conspiracy against our democracy. Everyone  involved must be held accountable, because no one is above the law. That’s true at the  federal level, and it’s especially true at the state level.

We need to be patient and let the justice system do its work. This is a complicated  indictment with many defendants and many alleged crimes. It’s going to take time.  But our democracy is strong enough to see it through. This kind of accountability is  what keeps our democracy strong.

Donald Trump has the right to defend himself in the criminal justice system, just as  he does in his other three indictments. He doesn’t have the right to intimidate  witnesses or attack judges and prosecutors. We saw the judge in the federal case  make that clear just last week.

  • District Attorney Willis is doing her job.
  •  She’s built a reputation for being methodical, determined, and ready to do the work,  even when it’s hard. And you’re seeing why.
  • She took her time, focused on the facts and the law, and saw this through. She made  sure she got the complete picture of what happened when Georgia’s election was  attacked.
  • She did this despite personal attacks and threats, delay tactics, and lies. Some of  that from Donald Trump himself. But DA Willis refused to get distracted. She knew  she had a job to do on behalf of the people of Fulton County and the state of Georgia.

In some ways, the Georgia case is the most important of them all because of the breadth of  the indictments. Regardless of the outcome of the 2024 presidential election, DA Willis and  this state prosecution can stay the course.

Messaging Toplines: Democrats Put People Over Politics

  • Democrats are putting People Over Politics to grow the middle class. We are fighting to lower costs and create better paying jobs while making sure the wealthy and well-connected pay their fair share.
  • Democrats are lowering costs for working families. We took on Big Pharma to reduce prescription drug costs and cap the price of insulin. We continue to fight special interests to cut everyday costs, protect and strengthen retirement security and ensure big corporations and billionaires are paying their fair share.
  • Democrats are lowering energy costs by $1,000 a year for the average family while reducing carbon pollution with the largest climate investments in America’s history.
  • Democrats are growing the middle class. By building the economy from the bottom up and the middle out, we have created more than 13 million jobs since President Biden took office. We are bringing supply chains back home, fixing our roads and bridges, and delivering clean water and high-speed internet to more communities.
  • Democrats are working to make our communities safer. We are committed to building on the gun safety legislation we passed last year to protect America’s kids and keep dangerous weapons off our streets.
  • Democrats will never stop fighting to defend our freedoms. We are committed to ensuring people, not politicians, can make their own health care decisions. And we will always fight for equal rights for all Americans.

DAILY TALKING POINTS

One-Year Anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act

  • Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act — a key piece of the president’s Bidenomics agenda to grow the economy from the middle out and bottom up — which reduces costs for Americans, invests in America, makes the tax code fairer, and is the most ambitious climate action in U.S. history.
  • In the year since its passage, the IRA is doing exactly what it said it would: reducing inflation and cutting costs for working families — despite every single Republican in Congress voting against it.

By the numbers, the IRA is:

  • Saving 1 in 3 Medicare beneficiaries — nearly 19 million people — a projected $400 per year on prescription drugs when the $2,000 out-of-pocket cap in President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act goes into effect in 2025,
  • Saving some seniors hundreds of dollars for a month’s supply of insulin after nearly 4 million seniors on Medicare with diabetes started to see their insulin costs capped at $35 per month this past January,
  • Allowing nearly 15 million Americans to continue to save an average of $800 per year on health insurance premiums,
  • Putting more than $1,000 per year back in the pockets of families who take advantage of clean energy and electric vehicle tax credits,
  • Making it more affordable to purchase energy efficient and electric appliances, home improvements, and more to bring down energy costs which will save every family an average of $500 a year on their energy bills,
  • Making the most consequential investment in tackling the climate crisis in U.S. history,
  • Helping create a manufacturing boom in America,
  • Reducing the deficit by hundreds of billions while NOT increasing taxes a single penny for families making under $400,000 a year.

Now, 2024 GOP presidential hopefuls are threatening to roll back the cost cutting measures in the IRA, a move that would INCREASE costs for millions of families.

  • It is critical that we build on the progress the IRA has made by reelecting President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Democrats up and down the ballot to finish the job.

Team Biden-Harris Ending the Summer in Strong Position

As campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez outlined this weekend, the campaign is ending the summer in a markedly strong position:

  • Campaign message is resonating with voters: Americans want more freedoms, not less, to protect our democracy, and to grow the economy from the bottom up and middle out,
  • Democrats continue to overperform in 2023 elections: Democrats are energized and have mobilized across the country to secure wins in Wisconsin, Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, and just this week, in Ohio. In the 38 partisan special elections that have occurred this year, Democrats have overperformed by an average of 10 points,
  • Partnering with stronger than ever national party: The campaign is already strategically building on the tremendous foundation of existing resources and infrastructure that enabled Democrats to defy expectations in 2022 and 2023.

Meanwhile, the Republican Party remains as splintered, divisive, and extreme as ever. MAGA Republicans want to:

  • Hurt our economy,
  • Cut Medicare and Social Security,
  • Ban abortion nationally,
  • Ban books and whitewash history,
  • Champion the NRA over gun safety and children,
  • Deny free and fair elections.

When it’s time for the American people to choose in November 2024, the choice couldn’t be clearer.

State of the 2024 GOP Field

2024 Republicans continue to prove that whoever the nominee is, they are guaranteed to be too extreme and out of touch for American families.

These hopefuls are all embracing the most extreme positions in order to win over the MAGA base. Three key toplines:

  • The GOP field continues to threaten health care for millions and put Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block,
  • Every GOP contender has an extreme anti-choice record and support for a federal ban has become a litmus test in their primary,
  • GOP contenders have embraced some of the most dangerous elements of their party, such as banning books, denying free and fair elections, and choosing the NRA over public safety.

This month, including the Iowa State Fair, was the perfect showcase for America to see how of step the GOP is:

  • Donald Trump cozied up with a known white nationalist and right wing extremist on the heels of a state fair appearance where Trump continued to spread lies about the 2024 election,
  • Mike Pence spent the weekend proudly doubling down on his record as a MAGA Republican and doubling down on his support for a national abortion ban,
  • Tim Scott once again bragged about his relationship with Donald Trump and their work to give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy, which added billions to the national deficit and left working families behind,
  • Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis sided with MAGA extremist Tommy Tuberville, supporting him undermining our military and jeopardizing our national security all for the cause of anti-abortion extremism.
