Ohioans Defeat Issue One

Ohio Voters Reject GOP Attack on Democracy

“Yesterday was an important victory for our state, the voters of Ohio and the principle of majority rule. Ohio Democrats were proud to play our part in stopping this political power grab by out-of-touch politicians at the statehouse – most notably Frank LaRose, who made himself the face of this effort and is now officially Ohio’s biggest loser. But our work is far from over.  Together, with the majority of Ohioans who believe in protecting reproductive rights, we’ll tell corrupt politicians trying to strip away our freedoms and pass a total abortion ban: we won’t go back.”

Yesterday, Ohio voters overwhelmingly rejected an effort by Republican lawmakers and special interests to change the state’s constitutional amendment process.

The measure was a blatant attempt to weaken voters’ voices and part of Republicans’ agenda to erode the freedom of women to make their own health care decisions.

Last night’s results build on Democrats’ momentum following the 2022 midterms. Democrats have overperformed partisan lean by an average of 10% in 38 special elections held so far this year. A few examples:

  • Wisconsin: Liberal candidate Janet Protasiewicz won the Wisconsin Supreme Court race by 11 points, outperforming all statewide Democrats’ 2022 margins. In Wisconsin’s 24th Assembly District, Democrat Bob Tatterson lost by just 7 points in a district where Republicans have a 22-point edge.
  • VA-04: Democrat Jennifer McClellan defeated Republican nominee Leon Benjamin by 50 points in a D+16 district.
  • Florida: Democrat Donna Deegan’s win in Jacksonville marked just the second time Democrats have won a mayor’s race in the city in the last 30 years. She won by four points in a city that Ron DeSantis won by 11 in 2022.
  • Tennessee: Democrat Justin Jones defeated Republican Lauren Nelson by 55 points in a district a Democrat won by 44 in 2020.
  • Kentucky: Democratic state Senate candidate Cassie Chambers Armstrong won by 54 points in a district that a Democrat won by 23 points in 2016.

State Issue 1 was a power grab designed to give special interests and politicians more power while silencing Ohioans. By voting no, Ohioans made it clear that they want to be heard and do not want their rights taken away.

FRANK LAROSE, A CANDIDATE IN OHIO‘S REPUBLICAN SENATE PRIMARY, IS THE BIGGEST LOSER OF STATE ISSUE 1.

LaRose put himself at the center of State Issue 1 – making himself the chief campaigner for an effort designed to silence Ohioans – and lost.

In the process, LaRose made a series of mistakes that hurt him:

  • LaRose was caught admitting the quiet part out loud: that this election is “100 percent” about abortion – earning him criticism from primary opponent Bernie Moreno.
  • LaRose went so far as to take the debate stage to defend State Issue 1 in his first week as a Senate candidate, where he was mocked and jeered by Ohioans.
  • LaRose opened himself up to ethics complaints and concerns raising questions about his close ties to State Issue 1.
  • LaRose proved that he would rather focus on advancing his political ambitions than doing the job taxpayers pay him to do:
  • While campaigning for State Issue 1, LaRose sent the incorrect ballot language out to all Boards of Elections days before the absentee ballot deadline – potentially costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars
  • Days before the election, LaRose sent the wrong election date out to poll workers and his office had to scramble to get the adequate number of poll workers.

In the process of tying himself to State Issue 1, LaRose suffocated his Senate campaign launch and was criticized by Republicans – pouring gasoline on the Ohio Senate primary infighting.

Bernie Moreno has criticized LaRose for saying the quiet part out loud that the August election is “100%” about abortion.

  • Republicans have admitted they were frustrated by LaRose’s mistake and proponents of Issue 1 have admitted that the focus on abortion has not been helpful.

Last week in a “hail mary pass to save his political career,” LaRose called on his primary opponents to donate to the Yes on 1 campaign to pull them closer to State Issue 1.

  • The move ignited infighting amongst the field – with Bernie Moreno’s campaign responding and criticizing LaRose for being more focused on his political ambitions than his job.

THE BIG PICTURE FOR OHIO’S SENATE RACE:

Sherrod is uniquely qualified to win in Ohio because he always does what’s right for Ohioans and focuses on workers and the Dignity of Work. That’s why he opposed this power grab.

  • Sherrod has always stood up to special interests and the rich and powerful to level the playing field for Ohioans – tonight, Ohioans sent a clear message that that’s exactly what they want from their elected officials.

All of the Republican candidates running against Sherrod Brown supported State Issue 1 – making it clear they are not with Ohioans, are on the side of special interests, and are anti-abortion.

President Biden Designates New AZ National Monument

 Talking Points:

  • President Biden is delivering on the most ambitious climate and conservation agenda in history.
  • As part of his unprecedented commitment to protecting and conserving 30% of lands and waters by 2030, today the President is establishing the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument.
  • Marking the 5th new national monument created by President Biden, this designation protects nearly 1 million acres of public lands surrounding Grand Canyon National Park and conserves this majestic land for all future generations.
  • These lands are sacred to Tribal nations, and by responding to Tribal-led efforts to protect them, the Biden-Harris Administration is helping address injustices of the past when Tribal Nations and Indigenous Peoples were forcibly removed from the lands that became Grand Canyon National Monument in the early 20th century.
  • The monument designation protects lands that have tremendous significance spiritually, scientifically, and economically and that are home to vast ecosystems and cultural sites, while honoring our promise to Tribal Nations.
  • At the same time, the Biden-Harris Administration announced a $44 million investment from the Inflation Reduction Act to make parks and communities everywhere more resilient to climate change and ensure future generations of Americans can enjoy these iconic landscapes.
  • And on Wednesday, Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff will travel to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, to uplift President Biden’s historic climate and conservation agenda.
  • The announcements to conserve our lands and protect the environment tee up the one-year anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act on August 16th. The law is the most ambitious action to combat the climate crisis in history, putting America on track to reach President Biden’s unprecedented climate goals.
  • President Biden will continue to lead on the most ambitious climate and conservation agenda in history, which is creating good-paying union jobs, strengthening America’s energy security, and delivering clean air and clean water for all people.

Talking Points On MAGA House Republicans’ Latest Political Stunt: Bogus Impeachment Of President Biden

Key Point: MAGA Republicans’ impeachment promises are nothing more than a partisan political stunt designed to hurt President Biden, and help Donald Trump. They have even admitted this. After failed hearing after failed hearing, MAGA Republicans have found NO EVIDENCE of wrongdoing by President Biden or his administration, but that hasn’t stopped them from continuing to push these baseless conspiracy theories and lies. Republicans continue to be focused on the wrong priorities, not the kitchen table issues that Americans care about.

The Toplines

  • Republicans in Congress have failed to find a single shred of evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden. Their so-called bombshell evidence does not exist. They don’t care about the truth. Their entire playbook is to spread baseless conspiracy theories before being forced to admit that they have no proof of anything. Even Fox News has repeatedly said they have failed. They have failed again and again to prove any evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden – but that hasn’t stopped them from pushing these ridiculous allegations and threats.
  • This bogus impeachment effort is a desperate attempt by MAGA Republicans to distract from Donald Trump’s serious legal troubles. Last fall, Speaker McCarthy played down the idea of impeachment, but as Trump has been indicted for 78 criminal counts and trials are about to begin Republicans are desperate to change the news cycle and protect Trump, their MAGA agenda and their power.
  • MAGA Republicans like James Comer and Jim Jordan have admitted that their investigations into President Biden are about helping Donald Trump get re-elected. Comer recently bragged about the effects his investigations were having on Trump and Biden’s 2024 poll numbers. And even before Republicans took control of the House, Comer and Jordan made clear that their focus would be on politically motivated investigations about President Biden in order to help Donald Trump in 2024.
  • MAGA Republicans have the wrong priorities. They are focusing on partisan political stunts rather than the real issues Americans care about like the economy and the cost of living. Between a bogus impeachment stunt, shutting down the government, defunding the FBI to protect Donald Trump, and trying to undo Donald Trump’s impeachments, the MAGA House and their so-called moderate members are showing the American people that their real priorities are MAGA priorities.
  • MAGA Republicans are a threat to democracy. All they care about is power. House Republicans have given support to extremists, conspiracy theorists, election deniers, and racists. They have shown a blatant disregard for the rule of law and support for political violence. MAGA House Republicans continue to defend the attack on our Capitol and on our country on January 6th. They call criminals who attacked law enforcement patriots and promise them pardons.
  • Republicans are scared of Biden’s unimpeachable record delivering results for the American people. The Biden administration has worked hard for the American people, creating millions of jobs, lowering health care and prescription drug costs, passing an historic infrastructure law, and putting the pandemic in the rearview mirror. Republicans know they have nothing to offer in comparison but partisan political stunts.

One Year Anniversary of the CHIPS and Science Act

One year ago today, President Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act into law.

This historic investment in American manufacturing is expected to help create hundreds of thousands of new jobs and better position our economy to compete on a global scale – particularly with China.

This investment is supercharging America’s competitiveness with China, strengthening our supply chains, and investing in the industries of the future:

  • Bolstering American leadership in semiconductor manufacturing by investing more than $52 billion in American semiconductor research, development, manufacturing, and workforce development,
  • Protecting national security and working with allies by ensuring technology and innovation from the program is not misused by foreign countries,
  • Encouraging regional economic growth and development by authorizing $10 billion to invest in regional innovation and technology hubs,
  • Jumpstarting our investments in industries of the future by providing over $13 billion in additional funds for semiconductor research, development, and workforce development,
  • Providing STEM education to more of America to ensure that more people from all backgrounds can benefit and participate in STEM job opportunities.

The CHIPS and Science Act is a prime example of President Biden’s economic vision – Bidenomics – in action by creating good-paying manufacturing jobs, building the middle class with more opportunities for workers, and making the US more competitive on the world stage.
